What IS a Vegan?

Whether you have been drawn to the movement for the social responsibility aspect of it, or the nutritional aspect of it, you'll find that there is a great deal to hear about becoming a vegan, or going vegan! Veganism is a lifestyle choice that follows the philosophy that will not willingly exploit any animal for food or for clothing. There are many things that might prompt a choice like this, and if it is a choice that you are curious about, you'll find that you should keep a few things in mind.

Although there is more to it than that, veganism differs from vegetarianism most obviously in the fact that it does not allow for the consumption of eggs or dairy products. In the vegan philosophy, the use and consumption of these products still results in the exploitation of animals and continues to encourage the industries that support that.

It makes sense that a diet that is so far from what you may have grown up with would affect your body in many ways. The results of a vegan diet on the human body are still in some ways contested, but some facts have come to light that can help you make your decision. Remember that this is something that you should also speak with your doctor about, particularly if you have a condition that might be affected by a drastic change in diet.

There are several benefits that can come from a vegan diet. For instance, these diets are of course low in animal protein, saturated fats, and cholesterol, while still allowing you to have a high level of healthy carbohydrates, potassium, antioxidants, folate and various vitamins. Overall, vegans tend to have a lower rate of heart disease, blood cholesterol levels, and hypertension, as well as prostate and colon cancer than the rest of the general population/.

Along with these benefits, it is also worth noting that a poorly planned or poorly executed vegan diet can have some severe consequences. For instance, vegan diets can be poor in things like calcium, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. This can lead to conditions including hyperthyroidism, rickets, anemia, and osteoporosis later in life, so make sure that you are aware of these risks.

Becoming a vegan can be a big step, so make sure that you take it with all of the knowledge that you need. Take a look at the choices you will be making and keep in mind the fact that you need to plan ahead!
